What is allowed and forbidden in a hotel?
Hotel rules are largely similar, but the details vary depending on the category of the property, internal regulations, and the booking method. To ensure your check-in goes smoothly without surprises, it is better to understand the basic standards in advance.
Some questions concern documents and the guest's age, others cover what is permitted during the stay, and a third group arises upon checkout. The answers to all of this are in the material below.
Check-in: Documents, Age, and Time
What Documents are Required Upon Check-in
The basis for check-in is an identity document. Without it, the hotel administration has the right to refuse accommodation.
Starting , the use of a driver's license, international passport, as well as identification via Gosuslugi or the Unified Biometric System is permitted in classified accommodation facilities. Such equipment is not yet installed everywhere, so a regular national passport remains the most reliable option.
For children under 14, the identifying document is a birth certificate - it must be presented along with the documents of parents or legal representatives.
From What Age Can You Book a Hotel Room on Your Own?
You can check into a hotel without any restrictions from the age of 18. For those who are younger, special rules apply:
| Age | Check-in Conditions |
|---|---|
| Under 14 years old | Accommodation only together with parents or official representatives. According to the Civil Code of the Russian Federation, all legally significant actions on behalf of children of this age are performed by parents, adoptive parents, or guardians. |
| 14 to 17 years old | Check-in is possible unaccompanied by adults if the minor has a passport and the written consent of one of the legal representatives. The law does not require this consent to be notarized, but for long-distance trips without parents, it will prevent unnecessary questions. If a passport has not yet been issued at age 14, a birth certificate is accepted. |
Important: the internal rules of a specific establishment may be stricter, so this point should be clarified before confirming the reservation.
Check-in and Check-out TimeHotels have the right to set their own checkout hour. Standard practice: check-in from 14:00, check-out until 12:00. Early check-in and late check-out are paid separately and are subject to availability. Please clarify the specific schedule when booking.
What is Allowed and Forbidden During the Stay
Guests in the Room
Inviting acquaintances is permitted in the presence of the guest themselves. Transferring the key card to persons not registered at the hotel is prohibited. In many hotels, visitors must be registered at the reception desk with a passport. The exact conditions for receiving guests are specified in the house rules - they are available at the front desk and on the website.
Food, Drinks, Delivery, and Smoking
Bringing your own food and drinks into the room for personal consumption is not prohibited in most cases. Smoking indoors is banned almost everywhere. Rules regarding balconies vary at each establishment - it is best to clarify upon check-in.
Receiving courier food delivery is allowed - most hotels do not restrict this. Please check with the administration regarding the delivery procedure: directly or through the reception desk.
If a guest disturbs the peace or is clearly intoxicated, the administration has the right to terminate the stay prematurely without compensation for the remaining nights.
Pets
Each hotel has its own internal policy - some allow pets, some do not. The possibility of checking in with a pet should always be clarified before confirming the reservation.
Loss of Key Card
The key card is hotel property, and the cost of its replacement is included in the final bill. As soon as you discover it is missing, report it to the reception immediately. A staff member will block the old card and issue a new one to prevent unauthorized access to the room.
General Order and Safety
Bringing weapons, explosives, and narcotics into hotels is prohibited. Guests are required to observe fire safety rules, respect quiet hours - usually from 23:00 to 07:00 - and compensate for any damage or loss of property.
What Can and Cannot Be Taken from the Room
Allowed to Take
All items intended for single use and sealed in individual packaging:
- disposable slippers;
- mini-cosmetics (shampoo, gel, soap, lotion);
- toothbrushes and toothpaste;
- shower caps;
- cotton pads;
- sewing kits and stationery.
After the guest checks out, such items are disposed of. You can also take complimentary gifts left by the hotel specifically for you.
Cannot Be Taken
Bathrobes, towels, bed linen, pillows, blankets - these are reusable property. Tableware, decor, hangers, and household appliances also remain in the room. Unauthorized removal is considered theft.
There is a specific nuance regarding bathrobes: unless it is marked "as a gift" and is not included in the rate price, it cannot be taken. Disposable slippers can be taken, but towels cannot. If in doubt, it is easier to ask the receptionist.
Deposit Upon Check-in
Deposit - a security amount requested by the hotel upon check-in. It is not included in the accommodation cost and is not an advance payment for the stay unless explicitly stated otherwise in the rate conditions.
The deposit covers three main risks:
- damage to or loss of property;
- unpaid additional services (mini-bar, laundry, phone calls);
- non-payment for accommodation.
The amount is either held in cash or blocked on a bank card. When blocked, the money is not deducted but becomes temporarily unavailable.
Upon check-out without violations, the deposit is returned in full: in cash immediately or by unblocking it on the card within a few banking days. The administration is obliged to notify the guest in advance about the deposit amount and its terms of application.
Reservation Cancellation and Refunds
The guest has the right to cancel the accommodation up until the actual time of check-in. With a refundable rate and timely cancellation, the full cost of the booking is refunded. If the cancellation occurs on the day of check-in or the guest fails to show up without warning, the hotel retains the cost of the first night.
To request a refund, submit an application to the administration, specifying:
- customer details;
- booking number;
- check-in date;
- reason for cancellation.
The application is reviewed within 10 days.
Direct Booking vs. Aggregators
When booking through third-party platforms, cancellation conditions are set by the aggregator or the rate: the penalty is often the cost of the first night or the entire period. With a direct request, the issue is resolved without intermediaries, and cancellation conditions are generally more flexible. Check the rate parameters before payment.
